Join us for the Learn & Burn at Sandhills WMA West — a one-day, hands-on prescribed fire training designed for landowners, natural resource professionals, and beginners interested in learning the basics of safe burning. Participants will take part in a live prescribed burn, gain practical experience using fire tools, and learn directly from experienced fire managers.
This introductory-level event is ideal for those with little to no prescribed fire experience. Instruction will cover:
Prescribed burn planning and permitting
Smoke management and fire weather
Liability laws and financial resources
Hands-on practice with drip torches and other tools of the trade
Opportunities to ask questions and learn from experts
Lunch will be provided on site-Pizza, drinks, and chips provided (vegetarian options available upon request)
What to Expect
Active participation in a live prescribed burn
Walking on uneven terrain and carrying tools
Requirement to wear natural fiber clothing (cotton, wool, linen, silk) and leather boots
Bring eye protection, leather gloves, a bandana, sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle
Requirements
All participants must sign a hold-harmless liability waiver on the day of the event.
This is an outdoor, all-day training — come prepared for weather and physical activity.
